As this academic year and my term as the chair of ACRED come to a close, I thought it would be a good time to reflect on all of the positive things happening on campus and beyond.
There has never been more opportunity — or more need — to work across cultures to find solutions to global problems. Carolina aims to ensure that all students receive a substantive combination of knowledge, experiences and skills to be engaged and dynamic global citizens.
Since assuming the role in November, Amy Locklear Hertel has kept herself busy as chief of staff for Chancellor Carol L. Folt. For her, it’s an opportunity to serve the University and the American Indian Center in new and significant ways.
Josmell Perez came to Carolina in 2007 to work as a recruiter for underrepresented students. Back then he said being Latino on campus wasn’t well defined. Fortunately for the University’s Latino students, The Latinx Collaborative now operates out of a shared seminar space in Craige North.
Josiah Evans attended a public high school with students of all races. Even so, he says he’s grateful for Carolina’s Mxle Scholars Program — originally titled Men of Color Engagement — which works with the University’s minority males to try to foster a greater sense of belonging among them while addressing their graduation rates.
